This mural is the result of a collaboration between artist Bak Pak Durden and KESSWA. The work, a meditation on collaboration, is the culmination of a series of improvisational braiding performances at Nightscape, 4 AM NYC's 2025 DJ residency at Detroit's UFO Bar.
During these performances, KESSWA improvised a braided hairstyle for anyone interested in under an hour, working within a designated area of the bar. The sitter featured in the mural is Rimarkable, a New York–based DJ originally from Detroit, Michigan.
Bak Pak documented the process through photography and later created this mural for Murals in the Market, Detroit's annual mural festival held in the historic Eastern Market. Drawing from a shared exploration of Afrosurrealism, Bak Pak created a dreamlike installation that offers viewers different perspectives depending on where they stand in relation to the work.
