SENSE OF URGENCY/IS MY MIND A MACHINE GUN (LIVE) 2021
Dlectricity Festival DESCRIPTION
In this performance of Sense of Urgency, KESSWA and Shigeto begin in a shared meditative posture, kneeling face-to-face on stage as a sustained synthesizer drone establishes the work’s sonic foundation. This opening functions as a preparatory ritual, orienting both performers and audience toward the unfolding soundscape.
This iteration incorporates a studio recording of KESSWA reciting Assata Shakur’s poem What Is Left, as KESSWA paces the front of the stage in a gesture of confrontation mirroring the tone of the text. The performance then transitions into a meditative house music composition. Repeated vocal phrases operate as invocations, summoning the presence of the divine feminine and collective strength. The work concludes with KESSWA distributing roses to audience members, extending the performance through an embodied gesture of care and connection.
